How Do You

By Enzo Kim

How do you
appreciate a flower?
I see its petals,
the thin arc of its stem—
Should I smell it, or taste it,
or rub its scent on my hands
so the memory lingers?
Should I twist it into a bookmark,
pressing it gently between pages,
or keep my distance
and admire its silent grace?

I don’t know—
but these are choices
to be made.

Enzo (Jinuk) Kim is a South Korean student at Columbia University, studying economics and creative writing.
